Product Description
3M™ Wrap Film 2080-HG31 — High Gloss Storm Gray
Sophisticated medium-dark gray with mirror-finish reflectivity. The modern luxury wrap color — subtle, versatile, broadly appealing. The shop's workhorse gray and the customer's go-to alternative to black.
3M™ Wrap Film 2080-HG31 High Gloss Storm Gray is a sophisticated medium-dark gray with a subtle cool undertone — not as light as Nardo, not as dark as Meteor, just the right depth to read modern and premium on almost any vehicle. Cast in 3M's flagship multi-layer 2080 construction with a 3.5-mil film body, gray Comply™ adhesive, and the protective film layer on the high-gloss surface, HG31 is the wrap of choice for modern luxury sedan refresh, Tesla and EV color changes, executive fleet, contemporary truck builds, and as a two-tone partner color where neither black nor white quite hits the mark.
HG31 is the wrap color customers reach for when they want to elevate their vehicle without making a loud statement. The deep optical depth from 250% better reflected image quality versus typical premium cast wrap films gives Storm Gray a paint-replacement quality, while the medium-dark value hides minor body imperfections better than lighter colors and shows less dirt and water spotting than black. For shops, HG31 is the workhorse gray — the SKU that quietly moves more rolls than any one identity color because it works for so many different builds.
Every roll ships with the removable protective film layer on the high-gloss surface. Leave the protective layer on through stretching, panel pulls, recess work, and trimming. Remove only before post-heating to reveal the untouched mirror finish underneath.

Installation Notes for HG31
- Dry apply only. Like all 2080 films, HG31 requires dry-apply installation. Do not use soap/water solutions, RapidTac, or any wet-apply chemistry.
- Surface temperature: Install at 60–90°F substrate temperature for best adhesive performance. Phoenix-area shops should install indoors or under shade during summer.
- Use a heat gun, not a torch. Open flame can scorch the protective film layer and discolor the high-gloss surface. Heat gun set to medium with steady motion is the proper technique.
- Leave the protective layer on through stretching, squeegeeing, and trimming. Remove only before post-heating to lock in the final finish.
- Lot matching: Less critical than on warm colors, but still recommended for full wraps. Gray lot-to-lot variation is rarely visible side-by-side, but for two-tone builds where HG31 meets another color, lot matching reduces visible seam variation.
- Post-heat to 195°F after install per 3M Instruction Bulletin 5.36 to lock in dimensional stability.
- Application tape: Generally not required. For pre-spaced cut graphics, test 3M™ Prespacing Tape SCPS-55 first.
Care & Maintenance
HG31 is one of the most maintenance-friendly colors in the 2080 lineup — the medium-dark tone hides road dust and minor contamination better than black or white. Still, the high-gloss surface benefits from a consistent care routine:
- Hand wash with mild automotive soap and a clean microfiber mitt — never use automatic car washes with rotating brushes
- Two-bucket wash method (wash bucket + rinse bucket) prevents swirl marks that can dull the gloss over time
- Dry with clean, soft microfiber towels — air drying causes water spots that show subtly on gray
- For surface contamination (tree sap, bird droppings, road tar), use a wrap-safe quick detailer or isopropyl alcohol diluted 70/30 — never solvent-based cleaners
- Apply a wrap-safe ceramic coating annually for added gloss protection and easier maintenance
- Avoid hot wax stations, harsh degreasers, gasoline spills, and abrasive bug/tar removers
- Phoenix-area customers benefit from more frequent cleaning during dust storm and monsoon season — gray hides surface dust but particles still accumulate and can dull the finish over time
Frequently Asked Questions
How is HG31 different from HG61 Nardo Gray or HG81 Meteor Gray?
All three are grays in the 2080 High Gloss lineup, but they differ in depth and undertone. HG31 Storm Gray is medium-dark with a cool undertone — the versatile "modern luxury" gray. HG61 Nardo Gray is lighter and more neutral-warm — specifically the Porsche/Audi heritage Nardo color, lighter than Storm. HG81 Meteor Gray is darker and more graphite/charcoal — reads almost as a softened black. If you want a gray that works on virtually any vehicle without specific brand association, HG31 is the answer. For Porsche or Audi enthusiast builds, HG61. For near-black stealth builds, HG81.
Will HG31 hold up to Arizona sun?
Yes, very well. Gray pigments are among the most UV-stable in any pigment system. HG31 in Phoenix typically delivers 6–8 years of real-world vertical service on outdoor-stored daily drivers — close to the maximum 8-year warranty period. Garaged or shade-parked vehicles will hit the full warranty range easily. Storm Gray is one of the strongest AZ daily-driver wrap candidates in the entire 2080 lineup.
How is HG31 different from regular Gloss Storm Gray (G31)?
HG31 is the High Gloss tier — mirror-grade reflectivity with 250% better reflected image quality than typical premium cast wrap films, reading as factory paint depth. G31 is the standard Gloss version, sharing the same color base but without the deep optical reflectivity. For customer-facing show car builds, luxury sedan refresh, and customer-facing executive vehicle work, choose HG31. For cost-conscious commercial fleet and broader-volume work, G31 saves on cost while delivering the same UV durability and warranty coverage.
Is HG31 close to any factory paint colors?
HG31 is in the visual neighborhood of BMW Mineral Gray, Mercedes-Benz Selenite Gray, Audi Daytona Gray, Tesla Midnight Silver Metallic, and similar modern luxury sedan grays. It's not an exact factory match for any specific OEM code, but reads as visually correct and contemporary. For exact factory color match work on collector-grade restoration, source OEM paint codes.
Does HG31 show dirt and water spots less than black?
Yes, noticeably. Black wraps show every speck of dust, every water spot, and every fingerprint — especially in dry, dusty climates. HG31's medium-dark value hides road dust and contamination far better while still reading as a premium dark color. For Phoenix and Southwest customers wanting the impact of a dark wrap without the maintenance burden, HG31 is a better choice than HG12 Black.
Can I use HG31 as the body color and HG12 Black for the hood and roof?
Yes — this is one of the most popular two-tone configurations in modern wrap work. Gray body with black hood, roof, mirror caps, and trim creates a refined contrast that reads as both modern and aggressive. The protective film layer should remain on during install for both colors. Lot match both films at order time for the cleanest panel-to-panel transitions.
How much HG31 do I need for a full vehicle wrap?
Rough sizing: 50–55 linear feet (60" width) for compact cars, 60–70 ft for mid-size sedans and SUVs, 75–90 ft for full-size trucks and large SUVs, 100+ ft for vans and box trucks. For Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, plan on 55–65 linear feet. Always order from the same lot for full wraps, and add 10–15% for waste and reshoots.
Will HG31 protect my paint?
HG31 acts as a sacrificial protection layer against minor scratches, light surface contamination, and UV exposure on the underlying OEM paint. Within the 8-year warranty period, the wrap removes cleanly with heat and/or 3M™ Citrus Base Cleaner. For rock chip protection, consider adding paint protection film (PPF) on high-impact zones — front bumper, hood leading edge, rocker panels — either over or instead of the wrap in those areas.
Is HG31 in stock in your Phoenix warehouse?
HG31 currently ships drop-direct from our 3M distribution partner with a 3–5 business day lead time. Storm Gray is one of the highest-volume colors in the modern wrap market and is on our list of strong Phoenix stocking candidates — behind HG12 Black and HG10 White but ahead of most identity colors. Contact us if you're a shop running consistent volume on gray builds.
Do you offer partial-roll cuts of HG31?
Standard configuration is a full 60" x 25 yd roll. For partial-roll cuts (common on two-tone builds where you only need partial coverage for hood/roof contrast), smaller test pieces, or bulk pricing on multiple rolls, contact us directly.
