Product Description
3M™ Wrap Film 2080-HG12 — High Gloss Black
Deep, jet-black mirror finish with 250% better reflected image quality. The wrap industry's #1 selling black — engineered for blackout builds, show cars, executive fleet, and luxury color-change projects.
3M™ Wrap Film 2080-HG12 High Gloss Black is the deepest, most reflective black in the 3M 2080 cast vinyl wrap lineup — and far and away the highest-volume color in the entire wrap industry. Cast from 3M's flagship multi-layer dual-cast construction with a 3.5-mil film body and a wet-paint surface depth that makes the wrap virtually indistinguishable from a hand-sprayed clear-coat jet black. For show car builds, full color-change wraps, blackout conversions, motorcycle fairings, and executive fleet branding, HG12 is the SKU that wrap shops keep in regular rotation.
The black-on-black reflection on HG12 hits differently than any standard gloss vinyl. With 250% better reflected image quality versus typical premium cast wrap films, this film captures highlight reflections, body line definition, and the surrounding environment the same way a polished factory paint job does. It's the visual depth that turns a customer's "nice wrap" reaction into the "is this paint or wrap?" double-take.
Every roll of HG12 ships with the removable protective film layer in place — an installer-critical feature on a color where every squeegee scratch, fingerprint, and surface impression would otherwise be magnified by the deep gloss. Leave the protective layer on through stretching, panel pulls, recess work, and trimming. Remove only before post-heating, and the wrap reveals an untouched, mirror-finish surface.

HG12 vs. Other 3M Black Wrap Films
3M offers black wrap films in several finishes — the right choice depends on the final look you're after. Here's how HG12 compares to the most common 3M alternatives:

Installation Notes for HG12
- Surface temperature: Install at 60–90°F substrate temperature. Hotter substrates cause adhesive flash and lock-down before you can reposition.
- Leave the protective layer on through the entire installation. On HG12 this matters more than on most colors — the high-gloss black surface shows every install scratch and fingerprint.
- Use clean tools and gloves. Dirty squeegee felts and bare fingers leave marks that are nearly invisible on white or matte but stand out on a high-gloss black panel.
- Lot matching: Less critical than on whites and metallics, but still recommended for full wraps. Black-to-black lot variation is rarely visible side-by-side.
- Post-heat to 195°F after install per 3M Instruction Bulletin 5.36 to lock in adhesion.
- Application tape: Generally not required. For pre-spaced cut graphics, test 3M™ Prespacing Tape SCPS-55 first — tape residue is more visible on high-gloss black.
Care & Maintenance
High Gloss Black shows water spots, swirl marks, and surface contamination more visibly than any other 2080 finish. Treat HG12 with the same care you'd give a black show-car paint job:
- Hand wash only with mild automotive soap and a clean microfiber mitt — never use automatic car washes with rotating brushes
- Two-bucket wash method (wash bucket + rinse bucket) prevents swirl marks from re-contaminated wash water
- Dry with clean, soft microfiber towels — air drying causes water spots that etch into the gloss layer over time
- Avoid hot wax stations, harsh degreasers, gasoline spills, and abrasive bug/tar removers
- For surface contamination (tree sap, bird droppings, road tar), use a wrap-safe quick detailer or isopropyl alcohol diluted 70/30 — never solvent-based cleaners
- Phoenix-area customers should expect more frequent cleaning during dust storm and monsoon season
Frequently Asked Questions
How is HG12 different from regular Gloss Black (G12)?
HG12 is the High Gloss tier — mirror-grade reflectivity with 250% better reflected image quality than typical premium cast wrap films. G12 is the standard Gloss Black and is still very shiny, but doesn't have the same wet-paint optical depth. For show-quality builds and luxury color-changes where the customer wants a paint-replacement look, choose HG12. For cost-conscious full wraps or applications where mirror reflectivity isn't critical, G12 saves on cost.
Will HG12 look like paint or like vinyl after install?
Installed correctly with the protective layer used through the process and proper post-heating, HG12 reads as freshly sprayed jet-black paint — not as wrap. The 3.5-mil dual-cast construction has low orange peel, and the high-gloss surface depth captures reflections the same way a polished clear-coat does. The most common reaction from customers post-install is "I can't tell it's wrap."
Does HG12 fade in the Arizona/Southwest sun?
HG12 is engineered with UV-stable pigments and is warranted by 3M against fading and oxidation as part of the MCS™ Warranty (up to 8 years vertical). In high-heat Southwest climates, real-world vertical lifespan is generally 5–7 years. Heat-related stress is a bigger factor than UV on black wraps in AZ — vehicles parked in shade or garages will see the high end of that range.
How much HG12 do I need for a full vehicle wrap?
Rough sizing guide: 50–55 linear feet (60" width) for compact cars, 60–70 ft for mid-size sedans and SUVs, 75–90 ft for full-size trucks and large SUVs, 100+ ft for vans and box trucks. Add 10–15% for waste, mistakes, and reshoots. One standard 60" x 25 yd roll covers most mid-size vehicles. For full-size pickups and SUVs, plan on two rolls.
Can HG12 be combined with other 2080 black finishes for a multi-finish build?
Yes — this is one of the most popular advanced techniques in modern wrap work. HG12 (high gloss black) body with M12 (matte black) hood/roof, or HG12 body with CFS12 (carbon fiber) accent panels, creates depth and visual interest without leaving the black color palette. The finish contrast is what carries the look.
Why does my HG12 wrap show fingerprints more than other colors?
High-gloss black surfaces show oils, fingerprints, and surface contamination far more visibly than lighter colors or matte finishes — this is a property of the color and finish, not a defect in the film. Use gloves during install, hand-wash regularly, and use a wrap-safe quick detailer to maintain the show finish.
Is HG12 the same as 3M Deep Black (DG12 or DM12)?
No. HG12 is the standard High Gloss Black. 3M offers a separate "Deep" color line where applicable — for example DM12 Dead Matte Black is a zero-reflectivity matte. There is no "Deep High Gloss" black in the 2080 lineup; HG12 is the deepest, most reflective gloss black 3M makes in this series.
