Product Description
Contra Vision® Performance™ Black Dual Color Film for Backlit Channel Letters
BBPAG20A is a 5.91-mil polymeric calendered black perforated film purpose-built for one job: giving built-up backlit channel letters and sign cabinets two completely different appearances from a single film. Applied to the outside face of the translucent acrylic panel, the sign reads as a clean semi-matt black face during the day — then glows the color of the underlying translucent acrylic at night, when the internal lighting comes on.
BBPAG20A is the UV-printable, Universal Liner version of Contra Vision's dual-color family. Its Grayliner™ technology eliminates the ink-bridging issue that affects Replacement Liner constructions when running UV-cure inkjet, making it the right choice for shops running HP Latex, Roland, Mimaki UV, Epson SureColor, or any UV/screen-printed workflow. Up to 3 years of warranted outdoor durability in North America (Zone 1).
Key Features
How the Dual-Color Effect Works
BBPAG20A is applied to the outside (first surface) of a backlit sign's translucent acrylic face panel. The film is 80% solid black PVC with 0.06" perforations covering 20% of the surface area.
- During the day (or with lights off): ambient light reflects off the semi-matt black film. The perforations are too small to perceive at typical viewing distance, and the sign reads as a clean, solid black face.
- At night (lights on): the internal lamps illuminate the translucent acrylic from behind. Light passes through the 20% open area of the film, and the acrylic's color becomes the dominant visible element — transforming the same sign into a glowing colored channel letter.
BBPAG20A vs BBCRW20A — Which Dual Color Film Is Right?
KG Supplies stocks two Contra Vision® dual-color films. Both produce the same dual-color visual effect. The choice comes down to expected service life, print method, and budget.

Printing Recommendations
BBPAG20A is fully compatible with all five major print technologies: solvent, eco-solvent, latex/resin, UV-cure inkjet, and screen printing. The Universal Liner with Grayliner™ technology was developed specifically to solve a problem that plagues Replacement Liner perforated films when used with UV printers: ink can bridge across the perforated holes in dark print areas and create visible flash after the liner is removed. The part-perforated Universal Liner eliminates this entirely.
- Ink must be fully cured and dry — including inside the perforated holes — before lamination or handling, to avoid contamination.
- The grey-printed Performance™ liner backprint provides a visual reference during print alignment.
- Test print on a small sample before running full production with any new ink/printer combination.
- For best dual-color effect, keep print densities moderate in areas where the underlying acrylic color should show through at night.
Warranted Durability by Region
Durability is stated for unprinted, untreated film correctly applied to an inert vertical substrate. Printed graphics, lamination, and substrate prep can affect actual life.
- Zone 1 — 3 years: United States, Canada, Patagonia
- Zone 2 — 2 years: Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay
- Zone 3 — 1 year: Bolivia, Brazil, Caribbean Islands, Central America, Mexico, Peru
For longer warranted life (up to 7 years Zone 1), see the cast version BBCRW20A.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "dual color" actually mean in practice?
It's the combination of two visual states from a single film: a solid semi-matt black look during the day or when your sign is off, and the color of your translucent acrylic when the sign is backlit. So a red translucent acrylic letter overlaid with BBPAG20A reads black by day and red at night.
Can I run this through a UV-cure printer?
Yes — this is one of the main reasons to choose BBPAG20A over the cast BBCRW20A. The Universal Liner with Grayliner™ technology eliminates the ink-bridging that plagues UV printing on Replacement Liner perforated films. It also runs cleanly on solvent, eco-solvent, latex, resin, and screen-print platforms.
Why would I choose BBPAG20A over the cast BBCRW20A?
Three main reasons: (1) you're running a UV-cure printer; (2) your sign installation is mid-term (1–3 years) rather than long-term architectural; or (3) you're managing budget on a project where 7-year cast durability is more than the application requires. BBPAG20A delivers the identical dual-color visual effect at a more accessible price point.
Which side of the channel letter does this go on?
BBPAG20A is applied to the outside (first surface) of the translucent acrylic face panel. The black film faces the public; the perforations carry the acrylic's color out at night.
Do the perforations show up close?
The hole diameter is 0.06 inches. From typical sign-reading distances (10+ feet), the film reads as solid black during the day. At very close inspection (under a few feet) the perforation pattern can be visible — similar to standard one-way vision window films.
How long will it last outdoors?
3 years in Zone 1 (United States and Canada) on static, vertical applications when correctly installed on an inert substrate. Printed graphics may have shorter warranted life depending on ink type — consult your ink manufacturer. For longer warranted life, choose the cast version BBCRW20A (up to 7 years Zone 1).
Is it removable?
The adhesive is described as a transparent removable polyacrylate, but BBPAG20A is not intended as a removable product. It's designed for the full warranted life of the sign installation.
What's the minimum application temperature?
50°F. Don't apply below this threshold; the adhesive won't tack properly and you'll risk lift, edge failure, or bubbling. Allow 24 hours before washing the sign face.
Can it be applied to curved channel letter returns?
BBPAG20A is engineered for flat or gently curved surfaces only. It's intended for the flat translucent acrylic face panel of channel letters — not for wrapping returns. Use a compatible cast vinyl for return color, or fabricate returns from pre-finished aluminum coil.
