Custom apparel is one of the fastest-growing add-ons for sign and print shops, and it does not require a screen-printing setup. If you already run a solvent or eco-solvent printer with a contour cutter, Stahls' CAD-COLOR Express Print lets you print full-color designs on heat transfer vinyl, cut them out, and press them onto shirts, jerseys, hoodies, and bags.
What Is CAD-COLOR Express Print?
Express Print is a printable heat transfer vinyl (HTV) from Stahls. It is a polyurethane film about 88 microns thick with a soft, semi-matte finish. You print your artwork directly on the film, cut around it, weed away the excess, and heat apply it. The result is a lightweight, flexible graphic that works on both light and dark garments.
Key Specifications
- Material: polyurethane (PU), 88 microns (0.088 mm), semi-matte finish
- Printers: solvent or eco-solvent. Not for inkjet or laser printers, and not for laser cutters.
- Fabrics: best on cotton and cotton/poly blends, light or dark. Our listing also notes polyester and Lycra/spandex.
- Press settings: 300°F, 15-20 seconds, medium pressure, wait 5 seconds, then peel warm (Stahls settings for Hotronix presses; other presses may need adjusting)
- Safety: CPSIA certified
- Care: wash inside-out with mild detergent, no bleach, tumble dry normal, do not dry clean
The Print, Cut, Mask, and Press Workflow
- Print and cut the design in positive form on the media side.
- Let the ink dry. Stahls' spec sheet lists 2-4 hours.
- Weed away the excess material.
- Apply a mask (Stahls recommends medium tack Magic Mask) and smooth out air bubbles.
- Lift the mask to expose the adhesive.
- Position the design on the garment and heat apply.
Always run a test cut before production, and keep lettering and logo lines at least 1/16" thick so small details weed cleanly.
Where It Works Best
- Team and club apparel, jerseys, and uniforms
- Small-run branded shirts and hoodies for local businesses
- Event and promotional merchandise
- Full-color logos and multi-color artwork that would be costly to screen print in low quantities
